Really enjoyed my first visit. It was such luxury to take the conveyer back up to the start. I think it was probably running around 8-9 cumecs (usual leisure level) making it far more forgiving than when the pumps are turned right up (max 16cumecs). It was shallow, making it possible for many of the numerous swimmers I saw to stand up in the eddies and climb out with ease. Its a fantastic technical, yet forgiving place to paddle. The thought of 16 cumecs is a bit terrifying though...

For the adventurous, it might be worth ringing to see if there are any planned high cumec releases.

Paddle for Life is a charitable event organised to raise awareness and funds for Save The Children, an international charity that works with children both here in the UK and worldwide.

Save the Children have joined forces with Quest Expeditions an outdoor activity provider with years of experience in Raft Building, kayaking, surfing, surf life saving and outdoor adventures to create the Paddle for life annual event.

There are numerous ways for you to get involved over the 14-15th August 2010 including a raft race, paddle board competition, kayak competition, and Beach games and events, attached is an outline of the plans for your viewing.

It would be fantastic if you and/or your team could join us for this fun filled Annual Beach Event based in and around the beautiful beaches of Porthcawl South Wales. It’s an event for family, friends and colleges alike, with races, competitions and beach games to keep you all entertained! Have an exciting day out and raise money to benefit children worldwide!

Save the Children work with the 1 in 3 children living in poverty here in the U.K., that’s over 3million children. For every pound given 83p goes directly to benefit the children, while the remainder 17p is used to raise further monies for the charity.

Re-profiling to the slalom course sides.
In order to create the turbulent water flow required by the canoeists who will use the completed facility, the shape of the course has been specially designed by the consultant responsible for this part of the centres performance, Hydrostadium. During August and early September the first stage of re-profiling the uniform reinforced concrete sides to the slalom course was completed using concrete blocks and backfilling the voids between the block work and concrete sides using a combination of single sized free draining stone and more interestingly bales of old car tyres. The use of car tyres has been chosen because it is an excellent way of utilising what is an abundant waste material which normally has to be disposed in landfill. It fulfils the performance requirements of the material required to fill these “dead zones” between the block work and vertical reinforced concrete walls, in that it is free draining and inert when in contact with water. But on top of this has several environmental benefits including reducing material to landfill and reducing the requirement of primary aggregates sourced from quarries.
After the block work was complete and the voids back filled, the final surface is formed by spraying concrete onto the blocks after first fixing a layer of steel mesh reinforcement to prevent cracking. The shotcrete, as this type of concrete is known, is then finished using wooden trowels as can be seen in the photographs. This work is expected to take about 5 weeks, weather permitting

People will be able to try canoeing, kayaking and rafting, hopefully if the weather is nice a BBQ.

Launch Event to celebrate the re-opening of the Rapids
Saturday 28th March 2009
The Official Opening with the cutting of a ribbon (actually red & white border tape left over from the in-river work) by a VIP (exact name to be confirmed - but you may be surprised!) will be at the top of the Rapids at 1pm.

We are expecting people to turn up from 11.30am onwards with parking down by the river at Wyedean Canoe Centre or through the village at the Royal Hotel (although paddlers will not be able to get on the river at the latter).

In addition to members from local canoe clubs we are inviting guests from a number of organisations that we have had to deal with during the project – BCU, Sports England, Environment Agency, Natural England, Wye Valley AONB, Gloucestershire & Herefordshire County Councils, Forestry Commission etc. We will be putting on a small display describing the background to the project in the back room of the Royal Hotel.

Once the rapids are officially opened there will be a mass descent by the youth members of the local canoe clubs followed by a number of demo sessions – Freestyle (including Palm Demo Team), Slalom (5 training gates), Open Canoes, In-River Rescue and Whitewater Racers. We are arranging a Tannoy System to keep people informed of what is going on and there will be a first aid station underneath the tree by the entrance to the Royal Hotel.

Once the demo events are complete the rapids will be available for general use and the slalom gates left up until 5pm before being taken down.

The event is free but the normal £3 per day parking charge will apply (we will be arranging car park marshals to organise the traffic, please be amiable on the day and follow their instructions!).

The original plan was to then have a large evening party with band and bar at Holly Barn but this has been scaled back and instead there will be a pig roast (£4 including a pint of real ale/soft drink) at the Lodge Hotel from 5pm followed by an amusing slideshow hosted by Fred Wondrer (and possibly some other guests as well).

To coincide with the Launch Event we are also organizing a Fund Raising Raffle with many desirable prizes donated by local businesses and the canoeing industry although the draw itself will not take place until the 1st September.
